Huawei is expected to unveil their Kirin 980 chipset at IFA 2018 which is scheduled at the end of August in Berline, Germany. Huawei’s upcoming Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are expected to come with the same Kirin 980 chipset.
Huawei has been working closely with TSMC to develop the Kirin 980 chipset. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei said that the first chip made of the 7nm fabrication process will be the Kirin 980. The prime focus of the chipset amongst the other leading chipsets like Qualcomm and Snapdragon will be to save power by efficient battery usage.
Speaking of Kirin 980 chipset, it’s expected to be an octa-core chipset ticking at a maximum speed of 2.8GHz with four Cortex-A77 cores and Cortex-A55 cores respectively. Just like Kirin 970, Kirin 980 will also come with a dedicated unit for a neural network (NPU1M). It will have features like LTE Cat and 19 network units which will give a maximum download speed up to 1.6Gbps.
