Corning announced the Corning Gorilla Glass 6. These Gorilla glasses are used on smartphones as a protective layer to protect the smartphone displays from unwanted falls. These glasses not only saves the device from minor scratches but also from unwanted falls.
The Corning Gorilla 6 comes with the tagline – Taking tough to new heights. The Corning guys claim this version to not only withstand fall from a certain height but also multiple such drops.
Impressive! Let’s check out the specifications of Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
Corning Gorilla Glass 6 Specifications
The fifth version of Corning’s Gorilla Glass was said to be twice as tough as the previous version. The new Gorilla glass is an improved version of the previous model. This new version can suffice multiple drops from significant heights.
Dr. Jaymin Amin, VP of technology and Product Development, Corning Gorilla Glass and Corning Speciality Materials said,”Gorilla Glass 6 is significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla 5. This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage. Moreover, with breaks during drops being a probabilistic event, the added compression helps increase, on average, the likelihood of survival through multiple drop events.”
We often drop our smartphones no matter how careful we are. No wonder to end up adding cases and tempered glass to our devices to keep them safe. However, sometimes it’s just not enough. Dropping our covered smartphones from a significant height makes the protection invalid.
It’s said that the Corning Gorilla Glass 6 can withstand 15 drops from a height up to 1 meter on rough surfaces. This means that Corning has achieved higher levels of compression with alteration in the chemical composition of the glass.
Another factor that has made the experiment possible is the larger screen size of the smartphones. Bigger screen sizes ensure that the scientists get a much larger area to experiment with the new technology.
Besides, the new Gorilla Glass 6 is also said to offer better clarity, touch sensitivity, scratch resistance, wireless charging and durability. Get ready to see the glass in upcoming smartphones by the end of this year.
